Leaves alternate, entire (in ours). Inflorescences of pedunculate axillary cymes. Calyx shorter than the corolla. Corolla 5-lobed; lobes subequal with broad membranous margins. Ovary inferior, 2-locular, fleshy. Stigma surrounded by a cup-shaped membrane. Fruit a succulent drupe. Derivation of name: after Mucius Scaevola, a Roman hero of the 6th Century BC Worldwide: 96 species in tropical Indo-Pacific, mostly Australia, with a few species extending to America, Asia and Africa Kenya: 1 taxon. |
